part of me feels centered
dress - modcloth
skirt - vintage
shoes - blowfish
belt - forever 21
We've been having crazy humidity here lately.. the kind where your clothes feel damp and if you walk barefoot on tile floors your feet feel sticky. BLECH! Another side effect of this weather is that my naturally wavy hair doesn't do anything I ask it to. I blow it straight, walk outside for one second, and boing! the waves are back, and my bangs have gone haywire. eek!
Rather than trying to tame my mane with styling products which never seem to work.. I'm just going with the flow this year. My hair naturally parts in the middle, and then the waves move outward from the center point, so I'm just going with a laid-back 70's style parted, feathered bang until the humidity dies down. I definitely don't love it as much as my full 60's bangs, but it's growing on me! :)

it's been fun.
dress - vintage
balloon sleeve bodysuit - boohoo
shoes - karmaloop
As much work as I put into this dress, I've come to the conclusion that I just don't like it :p It's a wee bit too short (my fault for not really measuring when I hemmed it..), the shoulders are too wide, and the torso is too long. I have to fold it over and then put the belt over the fold because my waist is too short for it! I was so proud of myself when I first altered it, but ever since then it's just been sitting in my closet collecting dust. Every time I try it on, I change my mind before I leave the house because of the odd bunching at the waist, and the fact that even the slightest wisp of wind and I'd be flashing my panties.
So this is the dress' swan song. I thought I'd do one last post with it before I put it away. I'm not going to throw it out or anything (yet) since it's my first moderately successful sewing project, but it's not going to be on my body, or this blog, again :( Poor dress.

What questions would you like to answer for question of the day (this is harder than it seems and I could really use some suggestions lol!)

Sailor Collar DIY
What you need:
A pillowcase
Light interfacing
Two buttons
An old sleeveless dress
First I should point out that I am probably the worst seamstress on the planet. The only thing I can do even remotely well is hemming, and even then I'm kind of iffy. This point illustrates two things:
a) I probably have no idea what I'm talking about. However..
b) If I can do it, you probably can too ;-)
When I saw this dress I immediately fell in love with the collar. However, since I'm on a strict budget now, I really couldn't afford to buy the dress (at that price I couldn't really afford it even when I wasn't on a strict budget.. lol) so I decided to try to restyle an old dress instead!
I got this dress for like $8 at a mall store a few years ago, and I think I've worn it one or two times. I'm not fond of the tank top look on top, so this was the perfect dress to alter! Since the closest fabric store is over a half hour away (and I don't drive) I just decided to use a white pillowcase, and it worked perfectly! Here's how I did it!

posh frock friday
dress - modcloth
bodysuit - boohoo
shoes - from my grandmom
I have an art show this weekend, so I have posts scheduled to go up Saturday through Monday.. provided blogger doesn't crash on us again (knock on wood!) I know I said I had stopped doing outdoor shows, and I did actually stop last spring (which made finding all of my supplies in the basement quite a challenge) but lately I've been feeling a particular kinship with Jackson Pollock, who started the show in the 1930's... when he needed money to pay for rent. ;-)
I even did a new painting specifically to enter in the show's contest, and I'm so happy with it! I haven't taken a proper photo yet but I'll post one next week when I get back. It's a traditional-ish portrait, which is unusual for me, but I really like it!
Anyway! Enough shop talk! :) How adorable is this dress?! I got it with store credit at modcloth a few weeks ago. I had the credit in my account for weeks and then bought this on a whim when I got a restock notification... and I'm so glad I did! I actually think this is my favorite PFF post EVER. I had so much fun wearing it, twirling around and generally acting like a ballerina princess tooth fairy angel girly girl.
ps. I have a fun DIY coming up later today, so check back!! :)

star stuff
That last photo shows thermal infrared images of Saturn, taken this January, during a rare storm. It's from this fascinating article about Saturn's weather from Science Daily. Saturn apparently gets these massive storms once every year (which is every 30 Earth years) so this is the first time scientists have been able to capture one with our modern technology. It's also the first time images of the storm were ever captured from an orbiting spacecraft. It's amazing to think how far we've come in the 30 years since Saturn's last storm, isn't it?!
Also, I adore this video from NPR about the mystery of why we can't walk in a straight line. I never even knew this.. now I wish I had some giant fields nearby to test it out!

Children of the 90's: does anyone remember those little fabric-covered elastic suspender straps that were used to cinch the back of your dress? It sort of functioned as a belt, to make your clothes fit better at the waist. I'm desperately in need of one for this skirt, but I don't know what they're called, or if anyone even makes them anymore, for that matter. They were such a genius invention, in my opinion... albeit now I'd prefer one that didn't look like a scrunchie, but it really performed a function that belts can't always pull off.
This skirt is SO darling, but the waist is just humungous. I adore the way it looks without a belt, though, so the hunt is on for a dress suspender thingy. Or maybe I'll make one! Hmm. DIY project perhaps? :D

outfit 1: boots - alloy
outfit 3: shoes - blowfish // vest - vintage // bag - h&m
I'm finding this dress really hard to restyle... it's kind of perfect just the way it is! It's my favorite dress to throw on when I'm going clothes shopping because it has a zipper that runs all the way down the front, so it's super easy to slip on & off in a dressing room. As much as I love the vest, I think that besides switching out the belt or shoes, it seems to work best without any accessories.

north country maid
dress - vintage
turtleneck - kohls
shoes - blowfish
I've had this dress since last fall, but this is the first time I've worn it! I couldn't really think of any way to style it without looking too costume-y at first, and by the time I finally figured out a way to wear it, it seemed like it would be too warm out to wear a turtleneck! But mother nature has been tricky this month... we've had a few nice sunny days but it's mostly been chilly, cold or rainy. Ideal weather for snugly long-sleeve shirts, I say! I think I still come pretty close to looking like I'm dressing up as either a 70's barmaid or a 1500's wench but I like it ;-D

I'm currently obsessed with Parks and Recreation. Oh. my. gosh. I don't know what is wrong with me but 2011 seems to be the year that I become hooked on a million different tv shows. First it was Eureka, then Twin Peaks, then Arrested Development and now this. I'm over halfway through season 2 now, and I only started it three nights ago. eek! But seriously, it's beyond amazing and ridiculously hilarious. Also, I used to intern in local government in high school (I was much more like Leslie than April) and it's hysterical how accurate it is!
ps. There's an interview with me today over at Such Stuff as Dreams are Made On, if you want to pop over and take a peek! :)
