the happiest place on earth

If you watched my Packing for Disney World video you'll know that I was very torn between dressing up or just being lazy and wearing leggings (or maybe dressing up and changing into jeans or leggings each night?) I decided to pack enough clothes to decide once I was in Florida, and I ended up splitting it about half and half - I wore cute clothes three days and went super casual the other four. It was the best of both (Disney) worlds! Total, complete comfort a couple days and photo-worthy cuteness on the others! :D

Video: Disney tag!

I'm going to try really hard to get some more videos up on my youtube channel this year. I feel like I'm closer to feeling comfortable in front of the camera. It helps that I'm very excited about the topic of this video, which is DISNEY! I decided to do a tag that I found on one of my favorite youtubers' channels. I embedded my video below but if you like it be sure to hop over to my channel to like and subscribe! :)

If you want to do this tag too, here are the questions:

1. A scene in any Disney movie that you wish you could experience.
2. An unforgettable experience/moment you've had at the parks.
3. What non-Disney song(s) reminds you of Disney and/or the parks?
4. When was the first time you went to a Disney park?
5. If you could choose any Disney character to be your best friend, who would you choose?
6. Who are your favorite Disney princesses (or heroines)?
7. Name a scene or moment in a Disney movie that never fails to make you cry.
8. What is the first Disney movie you remember seeing?
9. What is your favorite Disney movie?
10. Who is your favorite Disney villain?
11. What is your least favorite Disney movie?
12. What is your favorite Disney song?
13. What Disney character has your personality or has your dream personality?
14. If you could change any scene in a Disney movie, what would it be and why?
15. If you had to get stuck on a ride in any Disney park for more than 30 minutes, what would you want it to be?

just one more

Last photo from Disney! Sad face! Nicole had to catch a really early flight on Friday morning, so I went to The Magic Kingdom alone to fill out my postcards and walk around a bit before I had to head to the airport myself. It's funny, every time I've ever asked a Disney photographer to take a photo with my iphone they always come out SUPER dark. I don't think they know about the whole tap-to-lighten thing? It's not a big deal since Photoshop exists but it always amuses me anyway.

Me and Kyle are going back in September for Dapper Day, and I'm already planning my outfit! I think I might actually try to sew my own dress -- I haven't sewn a dress in like two years though so I'm not sure if I'm up for the challenge. eek! I have a bunch of dresses sitting in my mending pile so maybe I'll just tackle those first to get reacquainted with my sewing machine and then see what I can do ;)

there's no place like home

Yesterday was kind of rainy so my outfit pictures leave a bit to be desired.. but I loved this outfit anyway. I'm really smitten with the buttery yellow and mint green combination (obviously.)

Right now I'm sitting at the Columbia Harbor House restaurant in the Magic Kingdom filling out my postcards from my sale this week. I have a beautiful view from the upstairs, and can see the Haunted Mansion, Splash Mountain (I think?) and a pretty bed of flowers on the windowsill. It's really weird to think that basically in the blink of an eye I'll be home again. Weird but nice -- I miss my kitties and my family! And my bed, lol. I always miss my bed.

for the first time in forever

Bonus outfit! I actually had this scheduled for last Sunday but blogger didn't post it for some reason :\ It seemed like the perfect follow-up to my post this morning about Frozen, though, since the skirt is Frozen themed! It's Elsa on one side and Anna on the other. Isn't that cute?!

My favorite princess is and always will be Belle, but Elsa is definitely high up on the list (although I guess she's technically a queen, so maybe she doesn't have to compete with Ariel after all.) I love Anna too, especially her awkwardness, but I feel like Elsa is more relatable, for me at least. Because I have super powers that can turn everything into ice. Didn't know that about me, did you?

do you want to build a snowman?

Yesterday we went to Hollywood Studios for the second time this week. They have so much Frozen-themed stuff going on! When I visited in February you'd never know that Disney had even released the movie, so it's nice to finally see it splashed all over the place now :) They have a dedicated store, Wandering Oaken's Trading Post (a little disappointing that you're not greeted with someone saying "yoo hoo! big summer blowout!" though ;) Frozen-themed snacks and treats and even Frozen themed fireworks at night (which were AWESOME)

Also I wrote an article about my mobile office for the etsy seller handbook blog today! You can take a peek here. Pretty exciting!!  I'm super thrilled about it :D  You can also view a little video of the setup process on my instagram here :)

around the world in 80 minutes

I overheard someone at Epcot yesterday refer to the World Showcase as "around the world in 80 minutes" and thought it was kind of clever :) Although I'd like to meet someone who can actually whiz through the whole thing that fast. It always takes me at least a couple of hours to soak it all in. My favorite pavilion is Mexico -- if you've never been there you have to go if you ever visit Epcot! It's indoors, and made to look like a Mexican village at night and it's absolutely beautiful. It's also one of the only countries that has a ride. There's a part of the ride that looks like It's a Small World so you better believe I like it ;)

This photo was taken in England, another favorite. Most of the countries have restaurants and shopping and not too much else -- but I swear I could just hang around listening to the cast members' accents all day and that would be enough for me. I'm working on mustering up the courage to fly internationally, but until then Epcot is the closest I can get to Paris or London :)

minnie mouse

I wore this on Sunday for our first day at The Magic Kingdom. This dress just seemed so perfectly Disney-ish, I had to wear it! I didn't have any matching ears but when I showed my mom what I was packing she insisted that i get a pair with a red polka dot bow... and I mean, really, who can say no to their mom? ;)

It's been pretty hot here, but we've been ducking into air conditioned attractions & stores, and I got one of those water bottles with a spray fan attached. It's one of those things that I'll probably never use outside of Disney World but boy has it come in handy so far! Also, I left out something REALLY important in my Packing for Disney trip last week. Sunscreen!! I didn't only forget it in the post, I forgot it in my own luggage... oops! I picked some up at the gift shop today, but a little too late since my shoulders are already a nice lobster shade of red. At least they match my dress? ;p

how to pack for a disney trip

I'm leaving for Disney World in exactly 9 days (eek!) and I think I've finally been there enough times to have some handle on what I should pack and what I definitely shouldn't. One of the things I love about Disney trips is that I feel like I can dress even more colorful and whimsical than usual. I know, I know...  I don't exactly wear business suits in my daily life, but most of my Disney ensembles push the boundaries of what I'd normally wear at home.

For clothing, I like to opt for simple sleeveless dresses in really fun, colorful prints or comfortable high-waisted shorts with tights underneath. I go a little polka-dot crazy on Disney vacations (blame Minnie Mouse!) and tend to pair most of my brightly colored pieces with pops of black and white. No matter how something looks, though, the key is always comfort. You don't want to be hiking down shorts, pulling up pants or adjusting your neckline when you should be having fun! I usually plan each day's outfit before I go, take mirror selfies at home, and then reference them when I get dressed in the hotel. It makes getting ready in the morning go super fast!

1 // 2 // 3 // 4 // 5 // 6 // 7 // 8 // 9

During my last few trips, I opted to wear a backpack instead of a purse. It usually (depending on the size) can hold way more than a purse -- perfect for packing some backup deodorant (trust me, you want to bring it if you're visiting in the summer), some snacks and a sweater or wrap for chilly indoor attractions or cool Orlando nights. And if you're a pin trader like me, it holds way more pins than a pocketbook does ;)

1 // 2 // 3 // 4 // 5 // 6

Shoes! I can't stress this enough -- make your shoe choice based on comfort, not style. Style-wise, polka dotted sneakers wouldn't be my first pick for any outfit, basically ever. But I'd much rather spend my vacation enjoying myself rather than limping along in blister-covered feet. Ouch! Unfortunately, I speak from experience. In 2011 I brought along cute shoes that weren't broken in yet and I ended up buying an emergency pair of crocs so that my feet wouldn't be howling at me for the rest of the trip.

My tried and true favorites are the saddle shoes from Payless (#1 below.) They're SO comfortable, I can't even. Plus they look slightly more stylish than crocs ;) In general though, I think any shoes that you KNOW are comfy will work. I've worn my favorite asos t-strap flats with hardly any arch support and my feet were fine. As long as you know the shoes can withstand tons of walking, they should be okay.

1 // 2 // 3 // 4 // 5 // 6

In addition to the basics, there are some must-have accessories that I never leave out of my suitcase. If I'm going to be wearing any dresses or skirts, I always pack shorts to wear underneath. Depending on the dress, I'll wear bike shorts or slip shorts (btw, I wear slip shorts basically all the time, even when I'm not in Disney. They prevent wind-triggered flashing and help make unlined dresses look opaque. They're amazing!) This way you can enjoy all the freedom that comes with wearing pants, but you're wearing a dress. Wonderful!

Obviously you also need sunglasses. Extra points if they're pink and heart-shaped ;) But seriously, only bring ones that actually block out the sun. You want to be able to gaze up at Cinderella's Castle without having to squint.

I also always pack some kind of sweater or sweatshirt, even if I'm visiting in the hottest time of year. Some of the restaurants and rides can be really cold, plus after the sun goes down sometimes it can get pretty chilly.

If you have a cell phone, definitely bring a back-up battery. I take a ton of photos and use the Disney World app (it has maps, updated wait times, menus, etc.) so my battery is usually waning by the end of the day.

Last but certainly not least -- Ears!! Of course, you can buy ears at pretty much every store in Disney World, but if you plan ahead you can get some really cute ones from House of Mouse on etsy. They have themed ones for tons of rides and movies, plus these super pretty daisy ones that I have in my own ear collection. I can't wait to wear them with my pink hair next week :D

1 // 2 // 3 // 4 // 5 // 6 // 7

I also like to pack a lot of the things I'd normally keep in my purse anyway -- hand sanitizer, lip balm, extra bobby pins, etc. If you're going to be staying in a Disney hotel, try to think of every possible toiletry you might need and bring it. They have some necessities in their gift shops but they can be pretty expensive. No matter how hard I try, I always end up having to buy something on every trip -- a toothbrush, safety pins, nail clippers, etc.

And while the rides and attractions are all incredibly fantastic, I highly recommend packing a book or a sketchpad & pencils. On every trip I try to take a little time to sit down and read or draw, and it's always one of the highlights of my vacation. Last September I sat on a bench in a little secluded area with a perfect view of the castle and read for a couple hours while listening to the enchanting music that Disney pipes through the park. It's a really relaxing, peaceful way to enjoy the magic.

And if you do a horrible job of packing anyway, end up with achy feet, freezing limbs and your sunglasses are doing nothing to shield you from the blinding sun, don't fret, Disney has you covered. Your packing folly comes at a price (and usually a steep-ish one) but the stores are well-stocked with everything you might need if you're in a jam ;)

let it go

I had planned on blogging while I was on vacation but my hotel's wifi didn't work, so a little unexpected hiatus ensued, whoops!

I was so excited about disneybounding as Elsa from Frozen during my trip but my outfit didn't work out entirely the way I had planned. The aqua colored dress I had originally planned on wearing didn't really fit properly, so I changed to a white dress (that reminds me of snow) and blue tights instead. I spray-painted my shoes silver and covered them in glitter, but when I unpacked them at the hotel most of the glitter had fallen off :( My super sparkly vintage 50's cardigan looked so pretty on the hanger but on me I just kind of felt like an 80 year old who should be hanging out by the slot machines at a casino. The only thing in my outfit that I was really 100% happy with was the ears. I attached glittery white snowflakes to my silver sequined mickey ears and they came out exactly the way I wanted. Perfect Frozen ears!!

I felt so "blah" about my outfit when I was wearing it but looking back it's not too bad. I still wish it could have been perfect but I guess I need to just let it go ;)

tale as old as time

I saved my number one Disney princess for last -- Belle! It's actually one of my least favorite outfits that I put together, but maybe I just felt too much pressure trying to recreate my favorite and my brain couldn't handle it (at least that's the excuse I'm going to use.)

I can't believe tomorrow I'll be back home, back to the regular grind. This vacation was over much too quickly, but I'm looking forward to seeing my kitties again. I'm still having a really rough time missing Hypatia like crazy but my trip definitely helped lift my spirits a bit and reminded me that there are some things in life I can still enjoy and look forward to when everything else seems bleak. I love that Disney has that effect on me... I know some people outgrow its magic but I'm glad that it still cheers me up and comforts me so much when I'm blue :)

tranquil as a forest, but on fire within

This is my favorite of all my Disney outfits! It's not exactly like what Mulan really wore, but I think it reflects the shapes and simplicity and general color palette. I was eleven when the movie came out (dating myself a bit here..) and Belle and Ariel were already set in stone as my top two favorite Disney girls ever, but Mulan has always been really close to tying with them. Honestly if I wasn't so sentimental about The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast being such a huge part of my childhood, she'd probably be number one. I just love her character and the movie so much!

when there's a smile in your heart

I know this pretty much looks like a regular outfit I'd wear normally but I swear it was inspired by Tinkerbell lol. The white bow and the lace jacket reminded me a little of her wings, and this green was the closest I could get to her dress color (I always thought I had too many green dresses but once you take out all the mint ones there isn't much left, ha!)

I'm typing this post from my hotel room in Disney World! I was able to schedule Wendesday-Saturday from the plane but then we landed and I didn't get to finish up the rest of the posts until this morning :) I'm having such a nice time. We're really taking it easy and not rushing around the parks like we're usually inclined to do when vacationing here. And I'm eating so much food. SO much. When I get back I might need to write a post just about the food :)

Oh and yesterday I sat down near the pool and wrote out all of my postcards for my sweet and lovely orders, and then dropped them in the mailbox at the Magic Kingdom! So they're on their way!! I think there are still 9 coupon code uses left if anyone wants a postcard :) Details are in this post.
