softer than down, smoother than air

dress - h&m
shoes - blowfish
headband - f21
locket - handmade by me

This is the dress I was talking about earlier this month, that reminds me of Picnic at Hanging Rock. I don't usually wear things as flowy and loose as this dress because it doesn't really flatter my shape, but when I saw it on the rack at H&M I just had to have it! It's equal parts 1970's and 1900's, so I took inspiration from those decades for my accessories, with seventies style platform heels and an Edwardian style locket. Which, by the way, has photos of Chloe and Hypatia inside. Did someone say crazy cat lady?! ;-)

Do you want to comment, but have no idea what to say? Trust me, I've been there! So to make things a little easier, here is a question you can answer if you can't think of anything else to say! :)

What would you put inside of a locket?

Style Idol - the girls of Picnic at Hanging Rock

If you discount the corsets of the 1900's and the polyester of the 1970's, the two decades were actually quite similar when it comes to clothing. The ankle length billowing dresses, abundance of the color white and long flowing hair in Picnic at Hanging Rock could easily be from either decade and in this film, they're from both. The movie takes place in 1900, but was produced in 1975. Like most period pieces, the decade in which it was made is certainly evident, and while that can hurt some movies (60's bouffants in a film set in 1932 can be painful to watch) in this film it evokes a timeless quality that's a perfect fit for the mysterious and haunting storyline.

what we see and what we seem are but a dream

top - forever 21
skirt - h&m
shoes - aldo
bag - urban outfitters

After watching Picnic at Hanging Rock recently I've been really drawn to both 70's and early 1900's fashions. I bought a dress in New York last week that looks like it could have been worn in the movie... I can't wait to wear it when it finally gets warmer! It's a twirl-around-in-the-backyard-before-collapsing-in-a-wicker-chair-and-drinking-ice-cold-lemonade kind of dress.

I'm so jealous of bloggers who are posting spring-like photos already, when I'm still wearing my winter coat and a scarf to leave the house here! Last year our air conditioner broke in the beginning of summer and we couldn't afford to fix it, so I kind of loathed the whole season. We're finally getting it fixed next week, so I'm actually looking forward to the warmer weather this time, knowing I'll have a cool retreat if I get too hot outside :)
