fashions of 1965

I was flipping through a 'Teen magazine from 1965 that I got recently and came across an article called "Swing into the '65 Discotheque Look." I absolutely fell in love with the photos and the style that falls somewhere between early 60's prim and late 60's psychedelic. For instance, I love how the dress in the next photo has a real groovy print, but the figure-flattering cut and peter-pan collar still evoke a clean-cut pre-mod era. It's seriously the best of both worlds. Also can we all heave one large collective sigh over the fact that the article cites the prices for all of these pretty frocks as being no more more than $25 a piece. *sigh*

ps. If you want to download larger versions of these photos, I uploaded them to flickr here!

Freebie // 50 sixties hair scans

My new closet has a 60's beauty parlor theme, so I thought it would be really cool if I used vintage hairdo portraits for the artwork! I bought a 1965 mini purse book on etsy called "50 Styles for Problem Hair" and scanned the photos at 800 dpi so that I could have enlargements printed. So far I already had one printed at Staples as a black and white architectural blueprint (24" x 24" and it only cost me $3!) and it came out terrific! I mounted it with spray adhesive on foam board and it's already hanging up in my closet.

Anyway, I thought these pictures were so fantastic I just had to share them! You can do whatever you'd like with them. Combined the file size was way too big to upload as a zip file on my server, so instead I put them on flickr and you can download whichever ones you'd like individually. Here is the link to the set on flickr! :)

Style Idol - Everyone in this photo

//image links back to the source

Awesome people at Cannes, 1967... I know that's Nico & Andy Warhol in the foreground, not sure who the amazingly dressed girls are behind them though. But oh my gosh that dark suit with the white lace shirt is so pretty I'm crying daisies.

how cute can you be

How cute are these illustrations from Giselle Gonzalez?? I was searching on etsy for big eyed kid prints (like these) when I came across the piece at the top of this post. I was looking for a vintage print to hang in my room, but decided to search everything instead of limiting myself to vintage, and voila! I found this in the handmade section. Her whole shop is so absolutely adorable, with a 60's/70's illustration style that I love so much I want to give it a gigantic hug! The mod big-eyed girl is definitely my favorite, so I think that'll be gracing my wall soon! You can find her on etsy here, and her blog here.

Style Idol - Barbara Eden as Jeannie

The other day I was trying to think of a Style Idol for this week, when I stumbled upon a news article that Barbara Eden's memoirs were being released this spring! B-i-n-g-o! Style Idol: found.

I've loved Jeannie's wardrobe since I was a kid, when I Dream of Jeannie used to play during Nick at Night's Block Party Summer marathons. I love her normal pink uniform (I was incredibly disappointed when I was Jeannie for halloween in elementary school & my costume didn't look EXACTLY like hers) but it's the wardrobe she uses for mingling with mere mortals that really makes me swoon. I think that all of her outfits in this post exemplify what I'm hoping I'll find when I search the vintage listings on etsy. I just scan the dresses hoping that one of them will resemble something Jeannie would wear... albeit with a slightly longer hemline since I'm not fortunate enough to have those legs :\

My all time favorite Jeannie outfit is the white sparkly dress she wears when she sings "Power On" in the nightclub episode. I couldn't find a photo of it, but I did find a video on youtube. The song is great, too, so it's definitely worth watching! :)

Style Idol - Julie Christie in Petulia

Julie Christie will probably show up in this series a lot because she's one of my all time favorite actresses, people, and style icons. I just love her look in the 60's, whether she's being made up by a costume designer on set or just wearing her own clothes. My favorite outfit in this film is the black dress with the white belt & tie. I think I've actually had dreams in which I own this dress.. it's that deeply rooted in my subconscious, from thinking about it so often. I found one very similar from Canadian designer Marmalade, which is listed here but doesn't say whether it's available for purchase or not..
