thank you for being a friend

Today is my birthday! When I was little my dad used to celebrate his "29th" birthday every single year, even though he was already 33 when I was born. I think he kept it going way into his forties, and I always thought it was just a weird funny dad thing. But now that I'm turning 32 I kinda want to just celebrate my 29th birthday every year instead, lol!

31 was a really weird and rough year for me, health wise and just life wise, but strangely I feel a lot more comfortable with my shortcomings all of a sudden. Instead of feeling like I'm a failure at love or money or art I just feel like those shortcomings are a part of who I am. I've worked hard to overcome my health issues and I've become a much more disciplined person than I ever was before. I have a set daily schedule, I exercise, I eat healthy, I make time for reading each night and I don't skip washing my face *ever* which is a weird thing to be proud of at my age but I was pretty darn lazy about that for the last three decades.

So there are some things about my life that haven't gone according to plan -- it's fine. I'm feeling healthy, I'm taking care of myself, and I'm only 29 so I still have a long time to figure things out ;)

don't get around much anymore

It's not very glamourous, but this is my ideal night. Cozy on my couch with my cat, watching one of my favorite tv shows (or movies) with grapefruit juice. Hypatia's actually been under the weather again ("when is she not?", you're probably thinking .. I know, she's a hot mess!) and a trip to the vet today confirmed that she has a bladder infection :( At least now she has medicine in her system and should be back to normal soon! I'm just a little down because she was finally starting to look fluffy again after I had her shaved last year, and now all the fur on her back legs is patchy and thinning from her licking too much.

I know it's TMI.. sorry! A family friend stopped over our house today with her baby boy, and I had to try REALLY hard to suppress the urge to respond to all of her baby stories with similar stories about my cats. Sometimes "crazy cat lady" isn't having too many cats, it's taking the few you do have wayyyy too seriously lol! ;-D

ps. If you saw me tweeting about my new tv, this isn't it. I took the photo a few days ago before the new one got here :) Pictures will be up after I cover it in contact paper! Oh yes.

sunday funnies

We had to get rid of our newspaper subscription last year thanks to a tighter family budget, and although I liked reading the whole thing, I'll admit the part I missed the most was the Sunday Funnies. So ever since then I've tried to make it a little tradition to find something funny each Sunday morning to start my day off on a happy, silly note. And I thought, as long as I'm doing that already, why not share it here?!

I wanted my first Sunday Funnies feature to be a clip from Friends where they play a new game show called "Bamboozled!" but unfortunately it seems like every. single. Friends clip on youtube has embedding disabled. Because of course, that would only increase views and possibly gain the show more fans.. why would you want that? (ERGH.) Anyway, you can view the clip here. I'd say it's probably my favorite scene from the show, and that's saying something because I have about 8,000 favorite scenes (low ballpark estimate.)

While on the subject of funny scenes from my favorite shows, here's a clip I uploaded this week from The Golden Girls. Blanche is upset because she has to have surgery, so Rose recounts that as a child whenever she was scared or nervous, her mom would sing a lullaby to her that would always make her feel better .. the WWI battle song "Over There." As usual everyone looks at her like she's nuts, but when Blanche is being wheeled into surgery, they all burst out in song. It's hilarious!

And Sunday wouldn't be Sunday without my favorite newspaper comic, Monty!
