happy halloween!

I had no intention of dressing up for Halloween this year, but when I saw a costume of a Grady twin from The Shining at the mall the other day I thought it would be SO fun to do an outfit post with me being both twins. The costume at the mall wasn't my size, so I went on Amazon and found an Alice in Wonderland costume that worked just as well and paired it with a pink belt that I already had in my closet.

I actually came up with a really great idea for *another* costume this week too (why do I always get ideas for things at the very last minute?!) but I'm going to save it for next year so I can spend time perfecting it. It's way more obscure than this one, but I'm really excited about it.

I hope everyone has a safe and fun halloween! :D

DIY Halloween / Election Day mashup projects

What perfect serendipity is it for those of us who are obsessive about getting people to vote, that six days before Election Day everyone in this country goes door to door in their neighborhood collecting treats! Normally my front porch pumpkins would be obscured by shrubbery, but on All Hallows Eve they'll be seen by tons of parents and kiddos who come knocking at my door. And what better opportunity to remind moms and dads that Election Day is just around the corner than giving them their own candy bowl with some cute little notes reminding them to vote on November 6!

I have two DIYs in this post, so scroll down if you want the instructions and template for the pumpkin DIY! I'll start out first with the candy bowls and treat bags!

DIY Vote treat bags for parents

Even if you don't want to use these printables for handing out candy, they'd also be cute to put up on your office bulletin board so everyone at work gets a fun festive reminder to hit the polls. Or stick them up around your college campus, or community board at the grocery store. There are so many ways to use these, this Halloween treat bag idea is just one!

You'll need:

- Clear treat bags (ziploc baggies work fine too!)
- Candy
- Printables (Download here)
- Tape or baggy ties
- Two candy buckets
- Two chopsticks or popsicle sticks

Cut out the printable treat bag inserts and put them in the clear bags. Slide a piece of candy in the bag behind the insert, and then either tape the bag closed or use a baggy tie.

Next cut out your candy bowl signs, and attach them to the chopsticks or popsicle sticks with tape. Then tape the other end of the sticks to the back of the bowl, so your trick-or-treaters will be able to tell which bowl is which. In my house we leave the bowls outside so people can help themselves, and the signs make that super simple! If you're handing them out yourself, you can definitely leave off the signs.

ps. I also made the treat bag designs into buttons, right here!

DIY Vote pumpkins

These instructions are for a painted pumpkin, but I also included a template for making a jack-o-lantern version instead! Just follow these instructions for carving a pumpkin and make sure you use the "carve template" image in the download, since it has connecting pieces that will make sure your letters are cut correctly.

You'll need:

A large pumpkin
Acrylic paint
Vote template (Download here)
Carbon paper
Tape
Optional: carving knife (if you're making a jack-o-lantern)

Tape the carbon paper to the pumpkin, and then tape your template on top and trace the design. I used this stylus, but you can also use a pen with its cap on or the end of a paintbrush... anything with a pen-like tip that will apply enough pressure to transfer the design to your pumpkin.

This is what it will look like when you peel off the carbon paper. Now just fill it in with paint! I chose a bright blue color for the circle and white for the letters. It took two coats of each color for it to reach the opacity that I wanted, but it was so worth it! When I was done I also free-handed a heart on a smaller pumpkin and the election day date on another.

Look how cute they all look together!

I know that I've been going overboard on the whole voting thing (and I'm definitely worried that you guys are like "stop trying to make fetch voting happen, Kate") but it's so so so important! Be sure you check out Vote Save America to find your polling place, view your ballot, and check out candidates. You can even print out a sample ballot that you can fill out ahead of time and take with you into the voting booth so you know exactly who/what you want to vote for. Even if you vote straight down the ballot for one party, it's helpful to study the ballot questions and know your answer ahead of time. I always forget about those and then panic when I get in the booth and can't totally figure out which way I want to vote. So anyway, check out the website and make sure you've got your Election Day plans sorted out so you're good to go! :)

evil twin

Happy October!!

I was watching reruns of I Dream of Jeannie a couple months ago and was remembering how much I always used to love the evil twin episodes of Jeannie and Bewitched when I was a kid. I always thought it seemed so fun to have an evil twin! (Maybe I was just a weird kid?) Anyway, I decided to create one for myself. 💁🏼‍♀️

Or more accurately, I decided to create an evil twin instagram. I've been secretly (or not so secretly... some of my friends found it somehow!) putting it together for several weeks so that it would be ready to launch at the start of Halloween season! It's just a fun project for me to share the not-quite-pastel side of my life. Black outfits, scary movies, books about the black death, what have you. If you're interested, my account is @kateseviltwin. If you're not interested, don't worry, my normal account is still Pastel City, USA! I'm so excited about having an outlet for all kinds of fun spooky Halloween posts this month, though, so I hope you'll tag along! :)

Lazy bones

Happy Halloween! My plans for the day are just errands and computer work, so I decided to forgo the costume route this year and just wear one of my spooky dresses. I miss the preparation that goes into planning a costume, but it was a little bit of a relief to just not worry about it this year. I have been SO busy trying to get everything in my shop ready for the holidays that squeezing in making a costume probably would have been more stressful than fun, I think.

I still need to do a little post about my Paris trip! One of my favorite parts of the trip this year was the Paris catacombs, and although I didn't wear this while I was down there (which would have been epic and I'm a little bummed I didn't think of it beforehand!) I can't help but be reminded of the catacombs now when I wear this dress. I have mixed feelings about that experience. I loved the actual catacombs part and was very moved, but the corridors leading up to the catacombs unleashed in me a level of claustrophobia that I have never felt in my life. I was panicking so much that I was sweating, and it's really cold down there. I think it was worth it though. I'll write about it more when I do a full post about Paris! :)

Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween!

This was definitely a last minute costume (I painted that rib cage on my dress last night!) but I'm mildly happy with how it came out. I don't think I've ever done a spooky Halloween costume before, I usually go with some kind of pop culture figure (past favorites: Princess Unicorn from The Office and Helena from Orphan Black) but tonight I'm volunteering at my local independent movie theater and the costume theme is characters from horror films.

I have to admit, I haven't seen that many modern horror movies. I've seen a lot of the fun ones, like Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer, The Craft, Beetlejuice, etc. but ACTUAL horror movies like Saw, the Freddy movies, the Jason movies, The Exorcist, Poltergeist, those have all eluded me. So I went with what I know and chose to dress up like Barbara Steele's character from the 1961 Italian horror movie Black Sunday.

Black Sunday is about a witch who is burned at the stake and vows vengeance on the family that killed her. It's low budget but super atmospheric with lots of fog and cobwebs to give it a spooky vibe. It also has this thing (a lot of people HATE this in movies but I personally love it) where it takes place in the middle ages but everyone's hair and makeup is super 60's. It's probably one of the reasons I gravitated towards this movie when I was deciding on a costume :)

It's an Italian production but the movie is dubbed in English, so if you're not a fan of foreign films, don't let that turn you off. It's available to rent on amazon here, and I highly recommend it if you're in the mood for a fun thriller to watch tonight! I also just watched another Barbara Steele horror film (although this one is in Italian with English subtitles) called The Long Hair of Death. I like Black Sunday better but this one is *almost* as good, and it's on Amazon Prime so if you have an account it's free to stream :)

Last but not least, I put together a Halloween video set to Bauhaus' "She's in Parties." I included clips from some of my favorite spooky classic movies like Cat People, The Old Dark House, and The Bride of Frankenstein. If you're a fan of classic movies, I hope you'll love it, and if you're not a fan (yet!) maybe this video will give you a little taste of what classic horror movies are like. If you're interested in checking out any of the films in the video, I have a list of the ones that I included on the youtube video page here.

Since I'm pretty sure a reference is necessary for this costume, here is Barbara Steele in stills from Black Sunday:

it's beginning to look a lot like halloween

I'm in such a Halloween mood this year! I think it's actually going to be tough to let go of it after October 31st -- kind of like how sometimes you have to leave the Christmas tree up until mid-February. I'll still have fake spiders and webbing up around the house through November ;)

If you're a classic movie buff (and especially if you're a classic horror movie buff) there was some exciting news in the film restoration front this past week! My favorite spooky movie, The Old Dark House (1932) is getting a 4K restoration from Universal and the Cohen Media Group. I am SO excited. A lot of Cohen restorations get art house theater releases, too, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it shows up at The Film Forum in the next year or two. If you've never seen the film, don't wait for the restoration (although, watch that too once it's out, obviously!) it's available on DVD in a kind of shoddy public-domain style transfer but it's still SO GOOD and SOOOOO spooky! It's the perfect movie to watch late at night a few days before Halloween :)

where are these mangoes?

For Halloween I dressed up as my favorite clone from Orphan Black, Helena! I went with her season 1 look -- black pants, a white shirt, boots, and a dark green hooded parka -- but I had to include Pupok, too! According to the creators of the show Pupok has been a part of Helena's life since she was a child so even though we don't see the scorpion until this past season it was probably keeping Helena company in season 1 too.

I really wanted to do the bloody white wedding dress look but I couldn't find any cheap dresses that would do the trick. This is probably way more functional, anyway, since I'll definitely wear the jacket and white shirt in daily life (the pants and boots were already in my closet) The wig won't come in handy again unless I get to cosplay at some point (fingers crossed) btw if you're interested in dressing up as Helena at some point, this is just a curly blonde wig that I teased and I colored the roots in with a black sharpie!

And a Helena costume wouldn't be complete unless I was stuffing my mouth full of food, right? Behold - the least flattering photo of me in existence. If Tatiana can do it for her art, I can do it for Halloween ;D

modestly witchy

So I'm still managing to work some pastels in here but overall I felt like this was pretty full-on Halloween. The lace-up dress seems very medieval to me for some reason, so I had to buy it even though I had no idea how to wear it with a bra. This lacy tank top was the perfect solution so I can still be witchy, but modestly witchy.

My favorite part of this outfit though is definitely the tights!!

I'm going on my first cruise next week! I'm not sure how pricey wi-fi will be but I'll have to check into my work emails while I'm away anyway so if I can I'll try to post an update or two here as well. I'm really excited about the outfits I'm packing so I'm definitely going to try to take photos of them while I'm on board. In the meantime I'll try to post here again tomorrow to show off my Halloween costume. I posted a little sneak peek on my instagram last week if you're too curious to wait ;D

oujia breezy beautiful

Ahhhhhh worst quality photo ever! RUN FOR YOUR LIFEEEEEEEE

I've worn a few outfits that are intensely Halloween-ish this year (like the one that I'm going to be posting tomorrow) but I've also had fun assembling looks that look pretty normal except for one special spooky detail. In this outfit it's the cardigan, which is all business in the front and party with the dead in the back:

I. Emma Gost

I had a few outfit posts sitting on my memory card, three of which are Halloween themed, so I figured I better start posting them! They ALL came out incredibly dark and grainy somehow (well it's entirely because I'm still a camera novice.. but let's go with "somehow") and kind of greyish-green, but since Halloween is only several days away how about we all pretend that I'm going for a ghoulish look for my photos? ;P

Won't it be fun when I finally get my camera totally figured out and I stop talking about my camera settings all the time? Although, then maybe I'll have absolutely nothing to say?? Maybe I'm like those people who only talk about the weather, except instead of clouds I talk about ISO and f-stops.

Also, I didn't get a closeup picture but my brooch is a headstone that says I. Emma Gost (pun love!) It's available here.

two in a row

Two posts in a row, what is this madness??

Yesterday I started working on my new 2016 flapper doodle calendar (all my previous designs are still available with 2016 dates, too) I didn't do any new drawings last year because my new ones never sell as well as my old designs. I know this year won't be any different, but I want to make one anyway. Ever since I started making my living from my artwork I've struggled with the whole notion of making things because I love to make things vs. making things because I need to make money. Very often the fact that something doesn't sell will effect what I make in the future, and I kind of hate that. I really want to get back to where I was when I first started out, just making things for the sake of art and not letting sales stats influence me.

I mean, obviously when ALL of your income comes from what you make, your stats do need to influence you at least a little. My puns intended stuff hardly ever sells, so it would be silly for me to start devoting 100% of my efforts to new punny paintings. BUT, it would also be foolish to never make a new puns intended piece ever again simply because they don't sell well. I need to find a good balance.

Anyway, all that being said, I'm making a new calendar whether anyone wants it or not, lol.

why didn't the skeleton dance at the party?

Because he had no body to dance with!

So, I'm slightly in love with this dress. I had originally purchased this one about a month ago but the top was way too long on me so I either had to alter it or send it back. It sat in my mending pile for about a week before this dress I'm wearing was listed for sale and I decided to do an exchange. I'm SO much more happy with this one! It fits me perfectly and I like the pattern better. It reminds me of the Mutter Museum skull collection.

I'm obviously still pretty obsessed with Halloween. I started working on my costume this week and I'm stupidly excited with how it's coming together. I might post a sneak peek of some of the costume components on instagram this week if you're interested :)

Also, here's another brooch from my Halloween collection:

pastel witch

This is the face of someone who a) is really excited about Halloween, b) just put on false eyelashes for the first time and feels really uncomfortable blinking, and c) is frustrated that the lighting is so bad in the afternoon this time of year

I don't know what it is but I am just SO pumped (do people still stay pumped?) about Halloween this year. I want to wear dark makeup and black clothes and watch horror movies and eat pumpkin everything. Fall is always my favorite season (everyone usually qualifies this by saying they were born in autumn, and.. well.. I was.) but my Halloween fever is burning hotter than usual.

Now if you'll excuse me I'm going to go peel off my eyelashes and watch Dracula.

This was the reason for the falsies in the first place - I want to start wearing them when I'm in my own product shots and I took this as soon as I was done with my outfit pictures. I made a small batch of Halloween brooches and this is my favorite, it's Luna from The Mark of the Vampire. They're all available here.
